Showcase 7. Novgorod silverware of the XIIth to XVIIth centuries

In the 16th-17th centuries, Novgorod still remained a large centre of jewellery-making, which has preserved its own individual artistic manner. A favourite technique of the Novgorod jewellers was filigree, intended to embellish icons, gospels, crosses and other precious items with a pattern out of twisted pieces of wire, sometimes finished with coloured enamel.

The articles, represented in the showcase, refer to the 16th-17th centuries and include masterpieces by Novgorodian craftsmen made of precious stones and decorated with favourite techniques of filigree and enamels. The production of Novgorod silversmiths exerted influence on the development of decorative and applied arts of many Russian cultural centres, including Moscow. Their artistic manner and methods of metal processing can be traced through the forms and ornamentation of the items, produced in the Kremlin Golden and Silver Chambers.
