HALL 9. ROYAL CARRIAGES OF THE 16TH - 18TH CENTURIES
CloseThe collection of carriages housed in the Armoury Chamber is one of the finest in the world according to high-level artistic execution, diversity of forms and extensive chronological coverage. It presents masterpieces made by craftsmen from the largest Russian and Western European artistic centres such as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London. The collection gives a perfect opportunity to trace the development of forms, construction and décor of carriages during the period of the 16th to the 18th centuries taking the monuments of a worldwide significance as an example. The displayed carriages belonged to the Russian sovereigns of the 16th-18th centuries and were used during the most significant state ceremonies, such as tsar’s coming out, receptions of foreign ambassadors and coronation processions.
